I SUBMIT that this is the greatest moment of this game. i call it the “leaving midgar moment,” and i reference it a lot when i talk about shifts in scope and agency in video games.
at this point in my playthrough i’ve logged seven hours of the game. admittedly i did basically EVERYTHING you can do in midgar, including a little leveling, but still - it’s a long part of the game. seven hours in, midgar feels like the breadth of the world of final fantasy seven - a huge, sprawling megalopolis with many sectors still unexplored (not to mention the whole world on top of the plate).
but when you leave midgar, and see your tiny figure next to the city, and begin running across the fields, and twist the camera around… the world is HUGE, dotted with dozens of towns to explore. this point in the game is such a great shift in focus and scale that it still floors me every time i play up to it. i’ve played for seven hours and the game is just now beginning.

IMPORTANT OBSERVATION
